1203 Abandoned Shoe Factory
Abandoned Shoe Factory
Unfortunately, I can’t really offer much in the way of the history of this Abandoned Shoe Factory. I shot this site in 2011, not long after I began photographing abandoned buildings.
It was only really ever about the photos for me back then. I wish I had a bit more interest in the history then as I do now when I photographed this Abandoned Shoe Factory.

This Abandoned Shoe Factory was located in Northcote, Melbourne and given the rising popularity of the area and demand for housing within Melbourne; it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume this was sold and redeveloped several years ago.
As you can see, this was a shoe manufacturing factory.
It looked as though the factory still involved employed manual shoemaking processes which would hint towards the reasons behind its closure given the manufacturing climate in Australia today and the fact that most if not all of these processes can be produced much cheaper overseas.
Most of the equipment remained in place. There are lasts, presses, punches machines and production lines.
I can only wonder when this business came into being and the history of the building, so in saying that, if you do recognise what you see in these photos, please get in touch, I would love to know more about the history of this building.
