ATL Building, Meadowbank

ATL Building

The ATL Building sits on the Meadowbank peninsula on the Parramatta River, part of a mid-century commercial precinct that served the light industrial and administrative needs of western Sydney. The building housed offices and manufacturing functions over several decades before its tenants relocated and the complex was left vacant.

Inside, the building is intact to an unusual degree. Corridors, offices, and stairwells retain their original fittings. Fluorescent tube housings hang from ceiling grids. Filing cabinets stand open. The building has the particular atmosphere of a workplace that was simply walked away from — not stripped or vandalised, just stopped.

Large windows face the river on the upper floors, letting in the kind of flat, diffuse light that fills offices in the early morning before anyone arrives. That quality of light persists now that no one does.
