03 THE STORY

About this print

During HIFAR’s operational years, full protective equipment was mandatory in the reactor work area at all times. Health physics surveyors remained on-site, continually monitoring conditions, checking personnel for contamination, and ensuring that safety standards were upheld. This print will appeal to collectors of nuclear history, industrial technology enthusiasts, and those fascinated by the meticulous safety measures of scientific research facilities.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

The green equipment on the right is a silicon irradiation flask, designed for the controlled handling of silicon billets during irradiation. The flask’s shielding protected workers from radiation exposure while ensuring precise placement within the reactor.

At 11:15 pm on Sunday 26 January 1958, Australia Day, the High Flux Australian Reactor went critical for the first time with 11 of 25 fuel elements loaded. The men in the control room had come from Oak Ridge, Chalk River and Harwell. HIFAR was Australia's first nuclear reactor.
