03 THE STORY

About this print

A stainless steel prep table and sink bench stand on cracked floor tiles in the wash room at Blayney Abattoir. The bench is fixed to the wall along one side, the sink integrated into the working surface. Grease marks streak the rendered walls behind the bench. Debris is scattered across the floor. A paper lot tag is fixed to the right-hand doorframe, the print faded but still readable.

Blayney Abattoir operated under AQIS and AUSMEAT regulatory requirements, which required specific hygiene and inspection arrangements across the working areas of the plant. The plant ran for 41 years, from 1957 to 1998, processing sheep, cattle and pigs at scale. ANZCO Foods of New Zealand acquired the plant in 1996 and closed it in March 1998, with the workforce reducing from around 1,600 at peak to about 100 in the weeks before shutdown.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A shaft of light falls through an open window onto cracked floor tiles. A steel stool sits alone in the centre of the room. To the left, a stainless steel sink and skeletal bench frame stand against white ceramic splashback tiles, half of them missing. The walls carry a dark tideline of grime. Debris scatters the floor. A fire extinguisher hangs near the ceiling. Everything is coated in a fine grey dust.

At peak the Blayney Abattoir employed about 1,600 people, one of the largest workforces in Central West New South Wales. The site had been a butter factory and freezing works from at least 1900, converted to an abattoir in 1957. ANZCO Foods, the New Zealand owner since 1996, announced closure in March 1998 with about 600 workers given a week's pay.
