Inside a cell from Female Ward 9, light illuminates peeling paint and worn surfaces. A small window offers a view of the outside, a stark contrast to the confined space. This room once held individuals within the abandoned institution.

A small room, bare and closed in. Plaster curls away from the upper walls in thick, uneven strips. Dark mould spreads across every surface in grey and black patches. A steel door leans off its hinges against the corner, pulled free from its frame. Light enters through a single reinforced window fitted with a wire mesh grille, casting a grid of bright rectangles across the door and floor. Paint flakes and debris scatter the concrete underfoot. A circular ceiling vent sits near the peak of the room. The air in here feels close and damp.

Dr Frederic Norton Manning rejected the asylum as 'a cemetery for deceased intellects'. In 1876 he toured asylums in England, France, Germany and the United States, returning with drawings of Chartham Down Hospital in Kent. Working with Colonial Architect James Barnet and Botanic Gardens director Charles Moore, he built Australia's first hospital purpose-built for moral therapy treatment on the Iron Cove foreshore.
