About this print

Metal racks fill a storage room at Callan Park. The shelving is welded steel construction, painted in the institutional palette of the hospital's working years. The shelves are dust-covered, the inventories cleared at some point during the closure of the building. The floor between the racks is concrete, scuffed at the working positions.

Callan Park's storage and service spaces supported a patient population that peaked at 1,500 by 1930, more than double the hospital's designed capacity of around 600. The hospital was proclaimed as a separate institution on 1 August 1878 and merged with Broughton Hall to form Rozelle Hospital in 1976. Full closure followed on 30 April 2008.

From the field notes

Timber storage racks line both walls of a narrow room inside Callan Park. The shelves are empty. Bare wooden slats run horizontal across heavy upright frames, darkened with age. A checkerboard vinyl floor, black and grey squares, stretches toward a metal panel propped against the far wall. Low light enters from one side and catches dust on the shelf edges. The air in here feels still. Close. Cool.

Callan Park

Callan Park opened in 1885 as the Callan Park Hospital for the Insane, on land at Rozelle in Sydney's Inner West. The Kirkbride Complex was designed by colonial architect James Barnet and superintendent Frederick Norton Manning, intended as a working example of the more progressive psychiatric care principles of the period. The hospital was reorganised through the twentieth century and many of the wards remain. Brett photographed across multiple visits between 2016 and 2018.
