Grandstand Motel, Warwick Farm

The Grandstand Motel at Warwick Farm sits on the corner block opposite the racecourse, a two-storey brick building with the sign on a pole at the kerb. The sign is lit. A board of small white plastic letters below the brand name lists the room rates: long-stay weekly, overnight, half-day, hourly. The pavement at the base of the sign is cracked. Behind the sign the carpark is empty and the building's windows are mostly dark, with one or two amber-lit at the upper floor. The road is quiet. The traffic light at the corner cycles to no traffic at all.

The Grandstand is on the southern run of Hotel Motel 101, photographed on the second night of the project at 00:15 on 30 March 2018. The series ran to 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney that fortnight: south down the Hume Highway from Ashfield to Casula and on through the Southern Highlands to the start of the South Coast, north up the Pacific Highway to the Central Coast, west via the Great Western Highway through the Blue Mountains. The Grandstand was always going to be in the series. The pricing board at the front made the case better than any other sign in the project for what this typology was for and who was using it.
