03 THE STORY

About this print

A collection of inked rubber stamps rests on a grimy surface inside Kuwashima Orthopaedic Clinic. The stamps were used for marking forms and records across the working life of the hospital. The handles are timber, the rubber faces showing the wear of years of use. The paper around them is curled and yellowed. The surface below is the desk of one of the working rooms.

Kuwashima Orthopaedic Clinic is in Yubari, southern Hokkaido. Yubari's population peaked at over 100,000 in the 1960s during the coal mining boom and fell below 10,000 in the decades that followed as the coal mines closed. The hospital was abandoned at some point in that contraction. The interior has stood largely undisturbed in the years since the closure.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A metal stamp box sits open on a concrete windowsill. Japanese characters line each wooden-handled stamp, packed upright in neat rows. Labels with serial numbers and kanji cling to the handles. The case is marked "PAT.P" and "MADE IN JAPAN." Rust blooms across the lid hinges. Fine grit and broken glass cover the sill around it. Pale light falls flat through the window behind.
