Annaka Farm Shed

Purple, white and blue wildflowers crowd the foreground in front of a corrugated-iron shed at Annaka in Gunma, its walls streaked with long rust stains that bleed downward in broad, irregular channels. Concrete blocks sit on the roof as improvised weights. Sections of weathered timber rafter are exposed where the iron has pulled away, and a lean-to roof sags over timber posts at one end. A mountain range rises across the horizon behind the structure, sharp under an open sky.

Brett photographed this shed on 5 May 2016, on the Nikon D7000 he was carrying at the time. The Landscapes collection covers his wider travel photography across Australia and Japan rather than the abandoned-places work the Lost Collective is built on, and this is a working rural shed with no documented history attached to it. That is most of the point. There is no architect and no record here: the building is held together by whatever was to hand, including the blocks weighting the roof down against the wind. The frame gives it the attention usually reserved for something listed. The flowers have taken the ground in front, the iron has been rusting down the wall for years, and the range behind is doing the work a backdrop does.
