Light spills from a single tall pole over a playing field at Kareela, in Sydney's Sutherland Shire, the lamp reduced to a hard starburst against a dark sky. A strip of vivid green turf runs across the foreground. Dense eucalypt silhouettes border the field and swallow most of the glow before it reaches them, and past the field edge the tree line closes in, unlit.

03 THE STORY

About this print

Light spills from a single tall pole at the centre of the frame, its twin lamps reduced to a hard starburst against the dark sky above a sports field in Sydney's Sutherland Shire. A strip of vivid green turf runs across the foreground, bordered by dense eucalypt silhouettes that swallow most of the glow before it can reach them. Beyond the field edge the tree line closes in, unlit and close.

Brett photographed this on the evening of 6 April 2018, on the Nikon D850. The exposure holds the mown turf bright and lets everything past the trees go to black. The Landscapes collection covers his wider travel photography across Australia and Japan rather than the abandoned-places work the Lost Collective is built on, and no history attaches to a suburban playing field. The frame trades entirely on one contrast: the managed green of the field against the unlit bush around it, with a single point of light doing all the work in between. The gums absorb the light rather than returning it, which is why the edge of the field reads as a wall.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A single floodlight illuminates the night, standing tall against the backdrop of silhouetted trees. The stark contrast between the artificial glow and the encroaching darkness creates a scene that feels both cinematic and surreal - like a moment frozen in anticipation.
