Blackboard

A single blackboard on a classroom wall. No chalk, no writing, no furniture left behind. Just the board and the bare room around it, photographed in 2015, six years after the last student walked out. Macquarie Boys Technology High School occupied a purpose-built campus at the corner of Kissing Point Road and James Ruse Drive in North Parramatta from 1958. The school had a longer history before that: it traced its institutional lineage to post-primary boys' classes at Macquarie Street, Parramatta, operating from 1920, through several name changes before arriving at Macquarie Boys High School in 1955, then moving to the Rydalmere campus at the end of 1957. The buildings were constructed under the NSW Government Architect's Branch during Cobden Parkes' tenure as Government Architect, a standard postwar institutional typology: brick and concrete classroom blocks, covered walkways, assembly hall, playing fields across approximately 10 hectares. The word "Technology" was added to the school's name in 1989, reflecting a shift in curriculum emphasis. By 2007, enrolments had fallen to 220 students, with a projected intake of 180 for the following year. NSW Education Minister John Della Bosca announced the closure on 23 August 2007. Years 7 to 10 were discontinued at the beginning of 2008. The remaining Year 11 and 12 students stayed on to complete their HSC, and the school closed permanently at the end of 2009. What followed was nine years of vacancy. A replacement college proposed for the site never eventuated. The campus sat maintained but unused, accumulating graffiti, broken windows, and debris across its classroom blocks. A suspicious fire gutted the main hall in July 2016. A second fire destroyed another building in May 2017. All structures were demolished by November 2018. The blackboard in this photograph records none of that. It is just a surface, emptied out, waiting for something that was not coming.
