Berlin online art magazine iGNANT got in touch in early 2016 for a profile on Lost Collective.
The feedback when the iGNANT post hit Facebook was a useful early lesson in audience composition. Lost Collective's regular audience has tended to be fairly forgiving about edit choices. iGNANT's, less so.
Some of the feedback under the iGNANT crosspost was as you'd expect:
"Please iGNANT shows us no such HDR photos."
"2006 called, it wants its Flickr photos back."
"HDR post-process should be illegal."
HDR is one of those techniques that was so overdone in the early 2010s that the term itself became a critical shorthand for bad photography. The criticism is not unfair. It's also not the whole story. There's a great deal of bad music made every year. That isn't an argument against listening to music. My edit on these galleries has shifted considerably since 2016. The early Callan Park work in particular reads quite differently to where I am now.
"From an old power station to a forgotten hospital, the images depict decaying places in dark tones with an eerie atmosphere. In an exclusive statement about the project, Patman says: 'I've been shooting abandoned buildings for five years. I think they provide really interesting subject matter that often has rich history attached. The images are quite powerful and have the ability to engage entire communities in a discussion about the past, present and future of the buildings.'"
