03 THE STORY

About this print

A surgical theatre at Kuwashima Orthopaedic Clinic. An adjustable operating table sits beneath a multi-lens overhead lamp suspended from the ceiling. Stainless steel instrument trays line the floor around the table. The walls are clad in small-format white mosaic tiles. Medical equipment remains in place around the table, set where it was last used.

Kuwashima Orthopaedic Clinic is in Yubari, southern Hokkaido. The hospital was a regional medical facility with orthopaedic and post-surgical rehabilitation among its services. Yubari's population peaked at over 100,000 in the 1960s during the coal mining boom and collapsed below 10,000 over the following decades as successive mines closed. The hospital was abandoned at some point in that arc, the working fittings left in place.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A seven-lamp surgical light hangs over the operating table at the centre of the room. Grey dust coats the vinyl surface. A plaster cast saw sits where a patient's torso would have been. Instrument trays lie open on the mosaic tile floor, their contents scattered and oxidised. Stainless steel trolleys crowd the walls. White square tiles run from floor to ceiling, discoloured at the grout lines. Flat light enters through frosted windows, catching the grime on every surface.
