Two arched windows filter pale light through venetian blinds. Paint peels from every surface in thick, curling sheets, exposing layers of plaster and bare render beneath. The ceiling is dark with mould. A single electrical cable trails across the floor. Doors on either side stand open to adjoining rooms. Grey carpet, stained and compressed, covers the ground. The air in here is still and close. Portland Cement Works operated from 1929 until its closure in 1991, producing cement from limestone quarried in the surrounding hills west of Lithgow. The supervisors' office sat within the administration building overlooking the plant. After six decades of continuous production, the site was abandoned and left to deteriorate.
