Auditorium

Large graffiti lettering runs the length of the auditorium's left wall at the former Balmain Leagues Club, Rozelle, layered over competing tags built up through years of vacancy. A yellow bucket lies tipped near the skirting, debris scattered around it, and a grid of glass blocks at the far end of the room is the only source of natural light left in the space. Dust lies thick across the carpet. The club was purpose-built in 1957 on the corner of Victoria Road and Darling Street, a multi-level venue with a ballroom, main bar, gaming floor and function rooms serving the Balmain Tigers and the working-class community of Rozelle that had produced the club since 1908. For more than five decades the licensed premises funded the football operation, sustaining the Tigers through revenue the club alone could not generate, including the eleventh and final premiership win in 1969. Mounting debt led to the 1999 merger with Western Suburbs Magpies to form Wests Tigers, and the Victoria Road building closed its doors on 28 March 2010 under a government notice to vacate, issued for a metro rail project that was never built on the site. By 2015, when this photograph was made, copper wiring had been stripped throughout the building, windows were smashed, and interior deterioration was well advanced. A fire in 2022 destroyed the Victoria Road frontage, and the building was demolished in 2024 and 2025. This room, and everything in it, is gone.
