Girls' Bike

A pink child's bicycle, its frame marked with the characters 2cute, leans against a concrete wall. The word Rehab is sprayed in purple and red above a layer of yellow, red and black tags, and behind a metal rail a second wall carries loose work in blue, orange and purple. Dirt and debris settle across the ground in front. It is the kind of bicycle left at the end of an afternoon ride and never collected. Inside the shell of Balmain Leagues Club, Rozelle, in 2015, it is one of the more quietly unsettling things the building had to offer. The club opened in 1957 on the corner of Victoria Road and Darling Street, purpose-built to serve the Balmain Tigers Rugby League Football Club and the working-class community that had grown up around it. The Tigers were one of nine foundation clubs in the first season of the NSW Rugby Football League in 1908. The Victoria Road building gave that history a home: a ballroom, a main bar, a gaming floor, function rooms. It was the social infrastructure behind the football club. The club closed on 28 March 2010, after the NSW Government issued a notice to vacate for a proposed transport project that was never built on the site. What followed was fifteen years of planning disputes, rejected development applications, a voluntary administration, a government compulsory acquisition that was reversed, and two separate fires. By the time Inner West Council issued emergency orders in May 2022, the building had been officially assessed as derelict and dangerous. All openings required boarding. Structural bracing was mandated. Asbestos clearance was ordered. In 2015, when these photographs were made, the deterioration was already well advanced elsewhere in the building. Floorboards had buckled from water damage in the ballroom. Copper wiring had been stripped from walls. Graffiti covered the interior. Squatters had been through. And a small pink bicycle leaned against the wall. The building was demolished in 2024 and 2025. The Rozelle Village mixed-use development, which includes a new Balmain Leagues Club facility, is expected to complete in 2028.
