Betting Station

The TAB Sportsbet counter sits where it always did, set into a partition wall behind the blue fascia. Graffiti covers nearly every surface: the fascia, the wall behind it, the ceiling line above. A white face, spray-painted in broad strokes, stares outward from the partition. Loose wiring hangs from the ceiling. Debris covers the floor. This is what the betting station at Balmain Leagues Club looked like in 2015, five years after the building closed. Balmain Leagues Club opened in 1957 on the corner of Victoria Road and Darling Street, Rozelle, purpose-built as a social and community venue for the Balmain Tigers and the surrounding working-class suburb. The club supported the Tigers through the registered club model: gaming, bar, ballroom, and function rooms generating the revenue that kept the football side alive. The Tigers won eleven premierships between 1915 and 1969, but by the 1990s the financial model was failing. In 1999 the Tigers merged with Western Suburbs Magpies to form the Wests Tigers. In 2009 the Victoria Road property was sold for $1, the buyer assuming debts reported at more than $22 million. The club closed its doors on 28 March 2010 after the NSW Government issued a notice to vacate for a transport project that was ultimately never built on this site. What followed was fifteen years of argument, fire, compulsory acquisition, reversed acquisition, rejected development applications, and emergency council orders. The building sat on one of Sydney's busiest roads, open to the weather and to anyone who could find a way in. Copper wiring was stripped. Floors buckled. The betting station, the ballroom, the bar: all of it was left to absorb whatever came next. This photograph was made in 2015. The building was demolished in 2024 and 2025. The white face on the wall is gone with it.
