Cocktail Bar

One brown chair, stencilled with the word Elvies, remains upright among the debris. Saturated, decomposing carpet and scattered paper cover the floor beneath a graffiti mural of two faces painted across the central wall. Near the windows, horizontal blinds hang damaged above the tags, and exposed wiring trails down from gaps in the ceiling panels. The room stopped on 28 March 2010 and kept deteriorating after that. Balmain Leagues Club opened in 1957 as a purpose-built social venue on the corner of Victoria Road and Darling Street, Rozelle. It was the community infrastructure of the Balmain Tigers rugby league football club: a place for players, supporters, and the surrounding working-class suburb to gather. The ballroom, the main bar, the function rooms and, somewhere in the building, this cocktail bar were the reason people came when there was no match to watch. The Tigers had won eleven premierships by 1969. By the 1990s the club's finances were deteriorating alongside the wider deindustrialisation of the Inner West. In July 1999 the Tigers merged with Western Suburbs Magpies to form the Wests Tigers joint venture. The leagues club kept operating, but in 2009 the Victoria Road property was sold to a developer who assumed the club's debts. The doors closed the following year under a government notice to vacate. When this photograph was made in 2015, the building had been vacant for five years. Floors had buckled from water damage. Copper wiring had been stripped throughout. Graffiti covered the walls. This room reads as the record of that: a chair still standing, the carpet gone to pulp underfoot, and a mural painted long after the last night the lights were on. The building was demolished in 2024 and 2025. The Rozelle Village mixed-use development is now under construction on the site, with completion expected in 2028.
