Offices

A long corridor runs through the former office area of Balmain Leagues Club. Yellow-backed panelling leans against the right wall, and the floor holds a deep accumulation of papers, broken wall panels and cardboard, softened by decay. Large graffiti marks the far wall beside a window that pulls daylight down the length of the passage. Scraps of printed matter lie in the debris, including a fragment referencing membership. The building that housed these offices opened in 1957, purpose-built on the corner of Victoria Road and Darling Street, Rozelle. It was constructed to serve as the social and community base for Balmain Tigers Rugby League Football Club and its supporters, a licensed premises funding football operations through gaming, dining, and bar revenue. The club ran from that corner for 53 years, through premierships and decades of financial difficulty, through the 1999 merger with Western Suburbs Magpies that formed Wests Tigers, and through the 2005 NRL Grand Final celebrations held within its walls. On 28 March 2010, the New South Wales Government issued a notice to vacate in connection with a proposed Sydney Metro alignment that was later abandoned without ever touching the site. The club closed its doors. By the time this photograph was made in 2015, interior deterioration was well advanced: waterlogged floorboards buckled throughout the building, copper wiring had been stripped from conduits, graffiti covered the walls in layers, and evidence of squatting was widespread. The offices record none of the history of the football club. They record what happened to the building after the football club left. A site of 7,330 square metres on one of Sydney's busiest arterial roads, sitting derelict in full public view. The panelling came down. The paper stayed where it fell. The graffiti arrived afterwards. The building was demolished in 2024 and 2025. This photograph is what the offices looked like in the years between.
