03 THE STORY

About this print

A painted figure stands on a decaying interior wall at Bradmill, Yarraville. The figure has been worked up in spray paint and brush, in colours that still register against the surrounding decay. The brickwork around the figure is stained by water ingress and patched with graffiti from successive generations of access. The painted character was added to the wall years after the factory shut down.

Bradmill Denim Factory was operated by Bradmill Industries Ltd, founded in Sydney in 1927 as Bradford Cotton Mills. The company expanded into Victoria from 1940 and began producing denim at Yarraville in 1945. The Yarraville site was pushed into receivership in the early 2000s and shuttered around 2002. The site sat dormant for around two decades before redevelopment under Frasers Property Australia and Irongate as Bradmill Yarraville. Heavy graffiti accumulated through the abandonment years.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Deep red block letters stretch across a concrete tilt-panel wall. BLOOD WARS, BUDDY. The paint drips in thick runs, each letter standing over a metre high. Blue steel portal frames hold up the corrugated roof overhead. Light filters through translucent sheeting, casting a flat grey wash across the empty floor. Smaller tags crowd the edges. An electrical switchboard and a ventilation panel sit half-buried behind the lettering. Debris and scattered paper line the base of the wall.
