03 THE STORY

About this print

The BLOOD WARS BUDDY lettering fills the width of the concrete tilt-panel wall, the deep red block letters applied in thick spray paint with runs trailing from the base of each letter. Bradmill's Yarraville complex became one of the more extensively documented urban-exploration sites in Melbourne during the years it stood empty, and the interior walls accumulated layered graffiti across the dormant period. Brett photographed this wall in March 2012; the lettering was among the most deliberately made pieces in the building, reading like a statement rather than a tag, the blue steel portal frames of the roof structure holding the space above it.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Deep red block letters stretch across a concrete tilt-panel wall. BLOOD WARS, BUDDY. The paint drips in thick runs, each letter standing over a metre high. Blue steel portal frames hold up the corrugated roof overhead. Light filters through translucent sheeting, casting a flat grey wash across the empty floor. Smaller tags crowd the edges. An electrical switchboard and a ventilation panel sit half-buried behind the lettering. Debris and scattered paper line the base of the wall.

The Bradford family founded Bradford Cotton Mills in Sydney in 1927. The company expanded into Victoria in 1940, began producing denim in 1945, and grew into Bradmill Industries Ltd. The Yarraville factory on Francis Street was the country's only indigo denim mill.
