03 THE STORY

About this print

The elevated walkway inside the boiler house gave access to the upper levels of the machinery, the pipe connections, valves, and gauge points that needed to be reached for regular maintenance during operation. Steel cross-bracing and diagonal pipes ran through the walkway space, the industrial glazing on the right wall admitting light across the corroded handrails and grated flooring. The Bradmill boiler plant was built for daily maintenance access at multiple levels; by March 2012 the walkway was undisturbed, the mineral smell of damp brick and rust the only remaining sign of its purpose.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Steel cross-bracing and diagonal pipes cut across a narrow elevated walkway inside the Bradmill boiler house. Industrial glazing lines the right wall, diffused light falling across corroded handrails and grated flooring. Brick walls rise behind heavy ductwork overhead. Rust and grime coat every surface. The air feels close, mineral, damp.

The Bradford family founded Bradford Cotton Mills in Sydney in 1927. The company expanded into Victoria in 1940, began producing denim in 1945, and grew into Bradmill Industries Ltd. The Yarraville factory on Francis Street was the country's only indigo denim mill.
