03 THE STORY

About this print

A steel walkway runs through the boiler house at Bradmill, Yarraville. The walkway is grated steel decking, supported by structural beams and bolted to the building's framing at each landing. Rusted pipes run alongside the walkway, the lagging stripped from many sections, the bare steel showing the bloom of years of disuse. Industrial control panels stand at intervals along the run, the switches and gauges no longer connected.

Bradmill at Yarraville processed 40,000 bales of cotton a year at peak operation, with denim being one of several product lines. The boiler house provided the steam supply for the cotton spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing across the multi-building complex. Bradmill Industries Ltd ran in receivership in the early 2000s and the Yarraville site was shuttered around 2002. The site was acquired by Frasers Property Australia and Irongate for redevelopment as Bradmill Yarraville.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Steel cross-bracing and diagonal pipes cut across a narrow elevated walkway inside the Bradmill boiler house. Industrial glazing lines the right wall, diffused light falling across corroded handrails and grated flooring. Brick walls rise behind heavy ductwork overhead. Rust and grime coat every surface. The air feels close, mineral, damp.

The Bradford family founded Bradford Cotton Mills in Sydney in 1927. The company expanded into Victoria in 1940, began producing denim in 1945, and grew into Bradmill Industries Ltd. The Yarraville factory on Francis Street was the country's only indigo denim mill.
