Grated steel decking runs along the second-level walkway of the boiler house at Bradmill, Yarraville, its handrail eaten through with rust. Gridded windows to the right let in a wash of diffuse light, picking out broken fluorescent tubes still hanging in their housings and a tangle of structural beams and pipework beyond. Brick walls, partly obscured by metalwork, close the far end, where an oval-cut panel marks a door on the left.

About this print
Steel cross-bracing and diagonal pipes cut across a narrow elevated walkway inside the Bradmill boiler house. Industrial glazing lines the right wall, diffused light falling across corroded handrails and grated flooring. Brick walls rise behind heavy ductwork overhead. Rust and grime coat every surface. The air feels close, mineral, damp.

Bradmill Denim
The former Davies Coop / Bradmill factory, Yarraville, was a textile works on Francis Street in Melbourne's western suburbs, built as the dyeing and finishing plant of the cotton spinner Davies Coop & Co. Ltd. It followed a 1952 agreement with the Bradford Dyers' Association of England and was in production by the middle of 1955. Bradmill Industries bid for Davies Coop in 1969 and owned it outright by 1973. The steel-framed, red brick boiler house is the building the heritage listing names as a large and dominant local landmark.
