03 THE STORY

About this print

The exterior walls of the boiler plant at Bradmill, Yarraville. The brickwork is stained by time and weathered through patches of damp. Exposed pipework runs across the upper walls, the lagging stripped from sections, the bare steel rusted through. The brick is the original construction, the pipework added across successive plant upgrades through the working decades.

Bradmill at Yarraville processed 40,000 bales of cotton a year at peak operation, with the boiler plant providing the steam supply for spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing across the multi-building complex. Bradmill Industries Ltd was Australia's largest textile manufacturer at its 1970s peak. The Yarraville site was pushed into receivership in the early 2000s and shuttered around 2002. The 18.7-hectare site is now being redeveloped as Bradmill Yarraville.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Galvanised pipes run along the brick face of the boiler plant, bolted at intervals to the wall. Below, concrete hardstand breaks apart where grass and weeds push through expansion joints and open service pits. A chain-link enclosure guards a transformer unit, its warning sign still fixed to the fence. Overhead power lines cut across a flat grey sky. Dead shrubs tangle with new growth along the building's base. A fire extinguisher sits low to the ground, red against the dull concrete.

The Bradford family founded Bradford Cotton Mills in Sydney in 1927. The company expanded into Victoria in 1940, began producing denim in 1945, and grew into Bradmill Industries Ltd. The Yarraville factory on Francis Street was the country's only indigo denim mill.
