A red fire extinguisher stands upright in the weed-choked concrete forecourt at the former Davies Coop / Bradmill factory, Yarraville, left behind against the chain-link fence. Beyond it, a grey electrical transformer carries a DANGER HIGH VOLTAGE sign, and a utility pole strung with ceramic insulators runs up one side of the frame. The brick facade of the boiler house rises behind, its tall windows flanked by a run of large grey pipes, with a red-roofed shed set back to one side.

About this print
Galvanised pipes run along the brick face of the boiler plant, bolted at intervals to the wall. Below, concrete hardstand breaks apart where grass and weeds push through expansion joints and open service pits. A chain-link enclosure guards a transformer unit, its warning sign still fixed to the fence. Overhead power lines cut across a flat grey sky. Dead shrubs tangle with new growth along the building's base. A fire extinguisher sits low to the ground, red against the dull concrete.

Bradmill Denim
The former Davies Coop / Bradmill factory, Yarraville, was a textile works on Francis Street in Melbourne's western suburbs, built as the dyeing and finishing plant of the cotton spinner Davies Coop & Co. Ltd. It followed a 1952 agreement with the Bradford Dyers' Association of England and was in production by the middle of 1955. Bradmill Industries bid for Davies Coop in 1969 and owned it outright by 1973. The steel-framed, red brick boiler house is the building the heritage listing names as a large and dominant local landmark.
