03 THE STORY

About this print

A plant room at Bradmill, Yarraville. Dormant machinery fills the space: vessels, pumps, pipework, control panels arranged in a working layout that no longer functions. Rusted pipes cross the upper walls and ceiling. Dust covers every surface. The room is silent. The room was one of several plant rooms supporting the cotton processing across the Yarraville site.

Bradmill at Yarraville ran cotton spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing across multiple connected buildings: spinning mill, weaving sheds, dye house, boiler house, and ancillary plant. Bradmill Industries Ltd was the largest textile manufacturer in Australia at its 1970s peak. The Yarraville site was pushed into receivership in the early 2000s under cheap-import pressure and shuttered around 2002. The site has since been acquired by Frasers Property Australia and Irongate for redevelopment.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A plant room that has more or less been stripped of all its old machinery.

The Bradford family founded Bradford Cotton Mills in Sydney in 1927. The company expanded into Victoria in 1940, began producing denim in 1945, and grew into Bradmill Industries Ltd. The Yarraville factory on Francis Street was the country's only indigo denim mill.
