03 THE STORY

About this print

The plant room had been largely stripped, the heavy machinery that once occupied the space removed, leaving behind the fixed infrastructure: pipes, brackets, the mounts where equipment was bolted to the floor. This kind of selective clearance was common in industrial sites that closed in stages; the moveable plant was recovered, what remained was the building itself. The Bradmill factory at Yarraville closed around 2001 and had been empty for several years by the time Brett photographed it in March 2012. The plant room showed what remained once the process equipment was gone: structure, services, and the marks on the floor where work had been.

The Bradford family founded Bradford Cotton Mills in Sydney in 1927. The company expanded into Victoria in 1940, began producing denim in 1945, and grew into Bradmill Industries Ltd. The Yarraville factory on Francis Street was the country's only indigo denim mill.
