Stripped of its machinery, this broad plant room at Bradmill, Yarraville, retains little beyond structural bones: a concrete floor scattered with debris, exposed brick walls marked with graffiti, and a metal staircase climbing into shadow on the left. A red and white striped barrel lies on its side near the far wall, one of the few objects left behind. Broken panes in the upper windows send shafts of daylight across the dust.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The plant room had been largely stripped, the heavy machinery that once occupied the space removed, leaving behind the fixed infrastructure: pipes, brackets, the mounts where equipment was bolted to the floor. This kind of selective clearance was common in industrial sites that closed in stages; the moveable plant was recovered, what remained was the building itself. The Bradmill factory at Yarraville closed around 2001 and had been empty for several years by the time Brett photographed it in March 2012. The plant room showed what remained once the process equipment was gone: structure, services, and the marks on the floor where work had been.

Bradmill Denim

The former Davies Coop / Bradmill factory, Yarraville, was a textile works on Francis Street in Melbourne's western suburbs, built as the dyeing and finishing plant of the cotton spinner Davies Coop & Co. Ltd. It followed a 1952 agreement with the Bradford Dyers' Association of England and was in production by the middle of 1955. Bradmill Industries bid for Davies Coop in 1969 and owned it outright by 1973. The steel-framed, red brick boiler house is the building the heritage listing names as a large and dominant local landmark.
