Metal staircases rise through the rear of the boiler house at Bradmill, Yarraville, converging on tall gridded windows that push bright light down into the space. A large cylindrical vessel marked with graffiti stands at the centre, coiled hoses and loose cables strewn across the concrete floor below. A red fire hydrant sign is still fixed to the brick wall, legible against the accumulated grime.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The rear of the boiler house showed the scale of the plant that once maintained steam pressure across the Bradmill denim mill. Tall industrial windows ran the length of the wall at mid-level, admitting diffused light onto machinery that had been idle since the early 2000s. Bradmill Industries operated at the Yarraville site from 1940; the boiler house dates from the post-war expansion of the factory. By March 2012 the windows were intact and the machinery remained in its final position, the whole space accumulating the particular stillness that settles over a building left standing after the reason for it has gone.

The former Davies Coop / Bradmill factory, Yarraville, was a textile works on Francis Street in Melbourne's western suburbs, built as the dyeing and finishing plant of the cotton spinner Davies Coop & Co. Ltd. It followed a 1952 agreement with the Bradford Dyers' Association of England and was in production by the middle of 1955. Bradmill Industries bid for Davies Coop in 1969 and owned it outright by 1973. The steel-framed, red brick boiler house is the building the heritage listing names as a large and dominant local landmark.
