03 THE STORY

About this print

The rear of the boiler house at Bradmill, Yarraville. Heavy industrial machinery fills the cavernous space, the boilers and ancillary plant arranged on a concrete floor. Pipes run across the walls and ceiling, the lagging stripped from many sections. Fading light enters from windows along the upper walls and falls across the equipment below. The plant is silent.

The Bradmill boiler house drove the steam supply for cotton processing across the Yarraville site at peak operation, when the plant ran 40,000 bales of cotton a year and was the third-largest water user in Victoria. Bradmill Industries Ltd was Australia's largest textile manufacturer in the 1970s, with fifteen sites across three states. The Yarraville site was pushed into receivership in the early 2000s and shuttered around 2002.

The Bradford family founded Bradford Cotton Mills in Sydney in 1927. The company expanded into Victoria in 1940, began producing denim in 1945, and grew into Bradmill Industries Ltd. The Yarraville factory on Francis Street was the country's only indigo denim mill.
