03 THE STORY

About this print

The Appin Motel sits on the highway south of Sydney, a single-storey strip of rooms behind a small front carpark. The frontage is rendered brick painted cream, with the room doors set into the wall at regular intervals and a continuous awning running along the front. Each door is numbered in stencilled black on a small enamel plaque. The bays in front of the rooms are empty. A single security light at the office end throws hard light across the asphalt. The sign at the kerb carries the name in painted block capitals on a backlit panel, the vacancy box below it lit yellow. The road behind the camera is dark.

The Appin Motel was photographed at 00:08 on 3 April 2018, on the southern run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns over three sweeps out of Sydney across late March and early April 2018: south through the Hume Highway corridor and the Southern Highlands, north up the Pacific, west through the Blue Mountains. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The Appin sits on the older highway alignment, the kind of stop a Sydney-to-Canberra driver would have known by name before the freeway took the traffic past it.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A single security light burns above room 16, throwing hard white light across the concrete walkway. Rooms 14, 15, 16 run in a flat row beneath a corrugated iron verandah edged in blue trim. A mustard vinyl couch sits outside door 16 beside a stackable wooden chair and a small cabinet. The carpark is bare dirt. Lattice fencing closes off one end. Curtains hang behind narrow windows. No cars. No guests.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
