The Ashfield Motor Inn presents its weathered facade and faded signage. Its empty car park and dated architecture speak of past travellers and forgotten journeys in this urban relic.

03 THE STORY

About this print

Two storeys of brown brick and blue steel face an empty car park at the Ashfield Motor Inn. Fluorescent tubes throw flat white light along the upper walkway and down across the concrete bays below. Each room door is painted the same solid blue, numbered in small gold digits. Blank white panels sit where signs or room directories used to be. Mismatched chairs line the ground floor: a teal plastic seat outside one door, two grey stackable chairs further along. The carpark line markings have faded to cream. The road outside is quiet. Nothing is open. Nobody is moving.

Ashfield was the starting point. Hotel Motel 101 began as a run down the Hume Highway, from Ashfield to Casula, photographing every traditional motor inn that fit the typology. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Two more runs followed: north along the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains. By the end of the project there were 101 motels and roughly 120 visits, all shot late at night or in the small hours of the morning. The Ashfield Motor Inn was photographed in 2018, on the first of those runs, and the rest of the series followed from here.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
