Sunlight falls on the Ashwood Motel's weathered sign, its letters faded. Cracked walls and vacant rooms reveal a once-bustling stop now claimed by silence and decay.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The Ashwood Motel sits on a wide forecourt with the building running along the back of the lot, single-storey brick under a continuous awning. The brick is pale, the trim a cream along the fascia and the doorframes. The room doors face the front carpark in a straight row, each one numbered in stencilled gold on a small enamel plaque. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a serif face on a backlit cream panel. The carpark is empty at this hour. A row of small front gardens between the carpark and the road has been left to dry. The road beyond the property is wide and quiet.

The Ashwood Motel was photographed at 22:57 on 4 April 2018, on the north run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific to the Central Coast, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Tree-name motels were a standard piece of the postwar Australian motel naming convention, with Ashwood, Oakleigh, Elmwood, and others all reaching for the country-cottage feel at the highway-side.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Rooms 119, 120, 121. Cream brick, corrugated steel awning, white-lined parking bays. Night. The curtains glow warm behind plate glass windows. Two wicker chairs sit outside room 119 next to a fire extinguisher mounted on the wall. Small yuccas grow from a stone-edged garden bed between the concrete path and the carpark. A television antenna cuts into the dark sky above the flat roofline. The asphalt is clean. No cars.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
