03 THE STORY

About this print

The Banksia Motel carries its name on a pole sign at the kerb, the lettering in bold white against a backlit panel that is still glowing in the small hours. The building is single-storey, brick, with the room doors set into the front wall under a continuous awning. Each door faces a parking bay in the front carpark. The carpark is empty. The lawn between the carpark and the road is dry. A pair of metal-framed chairs sits outside one of the rooms. The road beyond the property is wide and quiet. A single security light throws warm cones across the front of the building.

The Banksia Motel was photographed at 22:22 on 29 March 2018, on the southern run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume Highway, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The Banksia sits on the older highway alignment, the kind of property a regular Sydney-to-Canberra driver would have known by name before the freeway moved the through traffic past it.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A single bulb burns above room 3, throwing hard light across the verandah and into the car park. Rooms 3, 4, 5 line up beneath a continuous corrugated iron awning. Cream brick, pale curtains drawn shut. A white plastic chair sits outside room 3. Small shrubs divide the doorways. The bitumen is cracked and empty. No cars. Deep blue night sky overhead.

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
