03 THE STORY

About this print

The Beach Park Motel in Wollongong sits on a street within walking distance of the Illawarra foreshore, the building two-storey brick with the room doors opening onto continuous balcony walkways at each floor. The brick is pale, the trim painted in a coastal teal along the eaves and the balustrade. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a 1970s sans-serif on a backlit panel. The carpark is empty in the late evening. A row of small front gardens between the carpark and the road carries the standard beachside landscaping. The Pacific Ocean is a short walk away; the property name carried the proximity into the brand.

The Beach Park Motel Wollongong was photographed at 23:46 on 6 April 2018, on the south-Wollongong run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume and the Princes Highway corridor, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Wollongong's beachside motor-inn strip carried several traditional properties through the postwar decades, serving the steel-city working trade and the South Coast through traffic.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
