03 THE STORY

About this print

The Berrima Bakehouse Motel sits on the older Hume Highway alignment near the historic village of Berrima in the Southern Highlands, the property name referring to the heritage-listed bakehouse that operates as part of the same complex. The building is single-storey, brick, with the room doors facing the front carpark under a continuous awning. The brick is pale, the trim a sandstone-toned cream along the fascia. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a serif face on a backlit panel, with a small bread-loaf graphic beside the lettering. The carpark is empty in the late evening. The Southern Highlands' cooler-climate landscaping sits along the front of the property.

The Berrima Bakehouse Motel was photographed at 23:24 on 7 April 2018, on the Southern Highlands run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume and Princes Highway corridor, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Berrima is one of NSW's best-preserved colonial-era villages, with the bakehouse and adjacent motel pitching at the heritage-tourism trade as much as the highway through-trade.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Rooms 4, 5 and 6 face a gravel car park under flat fluorescent light. Brown doors with cream aluminium frames sit between brick piers. Curtains are drawn behind every window. A timber sleeper planter marks the entrance to Room 4, its white sign slightly crooked. Ivy has threaded itself along the full width of the verandah beam, dried and tangled where the growth has slowed. A small conifer in a terracotta pot stands between the doors. The concrete path is clean. No cars. No guests.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
