03 THE STORY

About this print

The Best Western Alpine Motor Inn sits on the Great Western Highway in the Blue Mountains, the building a two-storey brick block with the Best Western brand sign on a pole at the kerb. The brand sign carries the chain's standard yellow-and-blue colour scheme, with the property's local name underneath the brand mark. Behind the sign the building runs along the back of the lot with the room doors opening onto a balcony walkway at the upper floor and a ground-floor walkway below. The carpark is empty at this hour. A single security light at the office end throws hard light across the asphalt.

The Best Western Alpine Motor Inn was photographed at 01:37 on 4 April 2018, on the western run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western through the Blue Mountains. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The Best Western brand sign sits over a property whose underlying building is the traditional Australian motor inn typology that the project documents regardless of the franchise badge.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two storeys of white-rendered facade split by a central brick column. The composition is near-symmetrical. Upper level balconies run behind zigzag steel balustrades. Amber glass panels glow above each doorway. Below, split-system units sit between windows. Floodlights wash the walls flat white against a black sky. Agapanthus and a flowering shrub press against diamond lattice fencing at ground level. Room numbers 9 and 10 are visible on the lower doors.

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
