03 THE STORY

About this print

Two white doors sit side by side in a low fibro and weatherboard front at the Bridge View Motel, cream cladding meeting a strip of brown brick at the centre column. The windows are dark. A fire hose reel hangs in its red cover to the left, a faded round sign on the wall beside it. Aloes and a potted shrub stand along the base. The ground is bare compacted gravel, and behind the roofline a single palm catches the light against a sky thick with stars.

The Bridge View Motel was photographed at 00:37 on 5 April 2018, on the north run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific to the Central Coast, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. View-claiming names were a standard piece of the postwar Australian motel naming convention, with the property's sightline of a bridge, a beach, a river, or a mountain woven into the brand at the kerb.

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
