03 THE STORY

About this print

The Bridge View Motel sits on a Central Coast street within view of one of the local Hawkesbury-corridor bridges, the property name referring to a sightline the upper rooms enjoyed. The building is two-storey, brick, with the room doors facing the front carpark in two stacked rows under continuous awnings. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name on a backlit panel. The brick is dark, the trim cream. The carpark is empty in the small hours. A single security light at the office end throws hard cones across the asphalt. The road in front of the property is dark.

The Bridge View Motel was photographed at 00:37 on 5 April 2018, on the north run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific to the Central Coast, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. View-claiming names were a standard piece of the postwar Australian motel naming convention, with the property's sightline of a bridge, a beach, a river, or a mountain woven into the brand at the kerb.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two white doors sit side by side in a low single-storey fibro and weatherboard facade. Cream cladding meets a strip of brown brick at the centre column. Windows dark. A fire hose reel hangs in its red cover to the left. Potted plants flank the entrance. Behind the roofline, a single palm tree catches light against a deep blue sky scattered with stars. The ground is bare compacted gravel. No cars. No movement.

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
