The faded sign of the Bushmans Motor Inn stands against a grey sky. Peeling paint and broken letters hint at past visitors. The abandoned building shows clear signs of neglect, a relic of forgotten roadside hospitality.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The Bushmans Motor Inn carries its name on a pole sign at the kerb in a serif face picked out in white against a backlit cream panel, with a small silhouetted bushman figure beside the lettering. The building behind the sign is single-storey, brick, with the room doors facing the front carpark under a continuous awning. The brick is pale, the trim a brown along the fascia. The carpark is empty in the small hours. A row of metal-framed chairs sits along the walkway. The country-town location sits inside the Central Western Tablelands corridor; the road in front is dark and quiet.

The Bushmans Motor Inn was photographed at 00:29 on 10 April 2018, on the western run of Hotel Motel 101, pushing west of the Blue Mountains escarpment. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Bushman-themed naming was a standard inland-NSW motel idiom, reaching for the settler-pastoral mythology that distinguishes the central tablelands properties from the coastal motel strip.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Brown brick facade, single storey, shot dead-on at night. Rooms 10 and 11 sit side by side, their grey doors closed. Wall-mounted lights throw hard pools of warm white across the brickwork, cutting sharp shadows beneath the split-system air conditioners bolted to the roofline. A fire extinguisher hangs between the doors. The bitumen carpark is empty. No cars. No movement. Just the low hum of electricity keeping the lights on.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
