The Chittaway Motel photographed at night for Hotel Motel 101. An outdoor pool sits empty in the frame. Brett Patman documented 101 traditional NSW roadside motor inns in 2018 across three routes from Sydney, shooting late at night to capture them without people.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The Chittaway Motel sits on a Central Coast suburban street in Chittaway Bay, a single-storey brick building running along the back of a wide front lot with the room doors facing forward. The brick is dark, the trim a cream along the fascia. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a 1970s sans-serif on a backlit panel. The carpark is empty in the small hours. A row of small front gardens between the carpark and the road has been left to dry; the plantings are scrub-bush native rather than tropical. A single security light at the office end throws hard cones across the asphalt.

The Chittaway Motel was photographed at 01:58 on 5 April 2018, on the north run of Hotel Motel 101, close to 2am, in the small hours that define the project. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific to the Central Coast, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Chittaway Bay sits on the southern shore of Tuggerah Lake, on the Central Coast hinterland a short drive from the beach strip.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two storeys of cream brick face the empty car park. Grey steel doors sit closed on both levels, numbered but unlit behind their windows. A metal staircase climbs the right side, its handrail catching the flood light. Dark green trim runs along the roofline where twin gable ends meet. Strip planting lines the ground floor. A faded blue accessibility symbol marks the concrete below. No cars. No movement. Just the flat hum of security lights against a black sky.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
