03 THE STORY

About this print

Two storeys of blonde brick front the Chittaway Motel, gabled awnings breaking the roofline above each stair landing. Dark doors repeat on both levels with small awning windows between them, and the ground-floor openings sit square-headed under flat soffits. A black steel balustrade runs the upper walkway and an external steel stair climbs at frame right. An accessible bay is marked in blue on the concrete, and strappy plants fill the garden beds along the frontage. The car park is empty in the small hours.

The Chittaway Motel was photographed at 01:58 on 5 April 2018, on the north run of Hotel Motel 101, close to 2am, in the small hours that define the project. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific to the Central Coast, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Chittaway Bay sits on the southern shore of Tuggerah Lake, on the Central Coast hinterland a short drive from the beach strip.

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
