Inside the Clarendon Guest House, sunbeams cut through the dim air. Layers of dust settle on forgotten furniture. Paint peels from the walls, revealing decades of neglect. This once bustling guest house now stands in silent decay.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The Clarendon Guest House sits on a Blue Mountains street in a two-storey brick building, the upper floor carrying the guest rooms behind a continuous balcony and the ground floor housing the reception, the common areas, and a small dining room. The building is older than most of the motels in the Hotel Motel 101 series: it predates the postwar motor-inn typology and operates instead in the older mountain-guest-house tradition. The brick is dark, painted in a cream trim along the eaves and the balustrade. A small front garden between the property and the road carries the standard mountain-bush plantings. The carpark is empty at this hour. A single light burns above the entry.

The Clarendon was photographed at 01:24 on 4 April 2018, on the western run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western through the Blue Mountains. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The Clarendon sits inside the project as a guest-house rather than a motor inn, the older typology that the postwar motel form progressively replaced.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two storeys of identical rooms face the car park. Rooms 4, 5, and 6 on the ground level. Rooms 11, 12, and 13 above, behind a metal balustrade walkway. Teal trim separates the floors. Net curtains hang behind every window, each pulled at a slightly different angle. Wall-mounted lamps throw a pale greenish light across rendered concrete. Fallen leaves sit on the footpath. No cars. No people.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
