03 THE STORY

About this print

The Colyton Hotel sits at the front of a wide forecourt on the western fringe of Sydney, a long single-storey building with the bar at one end and motel accommodation in the rest. The brick is cream, the trim a teal-green. A row of room doors face the carpark, each one set under a small steel awning. A single security light throws warm cones across the asphalt between the bays. The bar window at the far end of the building carries a lit BAR sign. The rest of the frontage is dark. The carpark is empty. The road in front of the property is wide and quiet at this hour.

The Colyton Hotel was photographed at 22:22 on 3 April 2018, on the southern run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume Highway, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The pub-motel hybrid sits inside the typology. Australian publican-licensed hotels that grew motor inn wings on the side of the public bar were a standard mid-century evolution.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A single-storey motel block sits flat against the night. Cream-rendered walls. White-framed doors and windows. Fluorescent light spills from inside, throwing hard shadows across the bitumen car park. A wooden bench seat sits outside one room. A potted shrub between two doors. A lone metal chair near the far end. The parking bays are empty. Line markings fade into cracked asphalt. Power lines cross the sky above a corrugated iron roofline. Eucalyptus trees darken the background.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
