03 THE STORY

About this print

The Comfort Inn Fairways sits on a street adjacent to a local golf course, the property name a direct reference to the fairways visible from the upper rooms during daylight. The building is two-storey, brick, with the room doors opening onto continuous balcony walkways at each floor. The Comfort Inn brand sign on a pole at the kerb carries the chain's standard yellow-and-red colour scheme, with the local Fairways name underneath the brand mark. The brick is pale, the trim painted in a contrasting cream. The carpark is empty in the small hours. A row of small front gardens carries the standard chain-property landscaping.

Comfort Inn Fairways was photographed at 00:45 on 7 April 2018, on the south Illawarra run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume and Princes Highway corridor, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Golf-course adjacency was a standard postwar Australian motel selling point, with properties near the local course pitching to the visiting-golfers trade alongside the highway through-trade.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two green plastic chairs sit between rooms 109 and 110 on the ground floor. Cream doors with deadbolts. Brown and grey brick in mixed tones, pitted and rough. Steel columns and cross-braced balustrade panels rise to a second level where rooms 209 and 210 are numbered above matching doors. A fire hose reel is bolted to the left wall. Fluorescent light washes warm against the brick. The concrete walkway is bare and clean.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
