The faded sign of the Comfort Inn North Shore still hangs, a relic of past hospitality. Paint peels from the building's facade. Empty windows stare out, reflecting the quiet decay of this forgotten place.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The Comfort Inn North Shore sits on a busy arterial road north of Sydney, the building two-storey brick with the room doors opening onto external balcony walkways at each floor. The Comfort Inn brand sign on a pole at the kerb carries the chain's standard yellow-and-red colour scheme. The brick is pale, painted in a cream trim along the eaves. A row of small front gardens between the carpark and the road carries the standard chain-property landscaping. The carpark is empty in the early evening. A single security light at the office end throws hard light across the asphalt.

The Comfort Inn North Shore was photographed at 21:17 on 4 April 2018, on the north run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific to the Central Coast, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The Comfort Inn brand sign sits over a property whose underlying building is the traditional Australian motor inn typology the project documents, regardless of the franchise badge.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two storeys of mustard-yellow rendered wall, divided by a white steel balustrade walkway. Rooms 8 and 19 sit directly above one another. Grey doors, louvre windows, circular exhaust vents. Wall-mounted lights throw a warm sodium glow across the façade. A single conifer in a terracotta pot stands between the parking bay lines. The bitumen is clean. No cars. No people. Fluorescent light bleeds through frosted glass from inside both rooms.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
