03 THE STORY

About this print

The Downtown Motel sits on a country-town main street, the property name reaching for the urban American motel idiom that the postwar Australian trade was happy to borrow. The building is single-storey, brick, with the room doors facing the front carpark under a continuous awning. The brick is pale, the trim a brown along the fascia and the doorframes. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a 1970s sans-serif on a backlit panel. The carpark is empty in the small hours, after 2am. A single security light at the office end throws hard cones across the asphalt. The road in front of the property is dark; the country-town main street has wound down for the night.

The Downtown Motel was photographed at 02:18 on 12 April 2018, the final night of Hotel Motel 101 and the project's last shot before Thirroul Beach Motel at 03:53. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. "Downtown" naming sits inside the postwar Australian motel's broader habit of reaching for the American urban-motel aesthetic to lend the property a touch of mid-century cool.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two storeys of brown brick and concrete slab. Units 11 and 14 sit stacked, identical in layout. Each door carries pressed decorative panels in dark frames. Curtains hang closed behind louvred windows. A window-mounted air conditioner juts from each unit. Security lights throw warm sodium across the walkways. A red fire hose reel is bolted to the lower wall. Wet asphalt below. A "No Parking" sign fixed to the brickwork.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
