The Engadine Motor Inn's reception area shows years of neglect. Faded wallpaper peels from the walls. Dust settles thickly on a forgotten counter. A single, broken light fitting hangs from the ceiling.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The Engadine Motor Inn sits on a street in Engadine, a single-storey brick building with the room doors facing the front carpark under a continuous awning. The brick is pale, painted in a brown trim along the fascia and the doorframes. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a serif face on a backlit panel. The carpark is empty in the early evening. The Royal National Park sits just to the south of the property; the road in front carries the highway out of suburban Sydney toward the Illawarra. A single security light at the office end throws hard light across the asphalt.

The Engadine Motor Inn was photographed at 22:12 on 6 April 2018, on the south-Wollongong run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume and the Princes Highway corridor, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Engadine sits at the southern edge of Sydney's suburban spread, the kind of property that carried the older Princes Highway trade before the freeway took most of the through traffic.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Peach-coloured render and concrete pillars divide the facade into identical bays. Rooms 30 and 31 sit behind metal balustrades, grey curtains drawn closed. Fluorescent strip lighting runs beneath the terracotta tile roof, throwing a flat, warm glow across the upper storey. Below, clipped shrubs line a narrow garden bed. The car park is empty. Stained concrete. Black sky pressing down.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
