03 THE STORY

About this print

The Galaxy Motel carries its name on a pole sign at the kerb with the lettering picked out in a 1960s atomic-age serif face, the brand mark including a small starburst graphic. The building behind the sign is single-storey, brick, with the room doors facing the front carpark under a continuous awning. The brick is pale, the trim a contrasting brown along the fascia. The carpark is empty at this hour. A small palm in a planter at the office end carries the standard postwar tropical-aspirational landscaping. A single security light throws hard cones across the asphalt. The road in front of the property is wide.

The Galaxy Motel was photographed at 23:08 on 4 April 2018, on the north run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific to the Central Coast, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Space-age and atomic-age naming was a 1960s postwar Australian motel idiom, reaching for the era's futurist glamour at the roadside trade. The Galaxy sign-face is consistent with that period.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two storeys of rendered masonry and blockwork face an empty car park. Rooms 5, 6 and 7 line the ground floor. Rooms 30, 31 and 32 sit above, behind a steel balustrade walkway. A single potted shrub stands between two concrete wheel stops, lit by a wall-mounted lamp. One decorative light fixture glows on the upper level. Every curtain is drawn. The bitumen is clean, the line markings fresh. No cars. No people.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
