The Gardenia Motor Inn stands derelict, its faded signage and peeling paint revealing years of abandonment. Empty rooms await, windows broken, as this once-vibrant motel silently succumbs to time.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The Gardenia Motor Inn sits behind a wide front carpark, the single-storey building running along the back of the lot with the room doors facing forward. The brick is pale, painted cream along the eaves and brown along the trim. A pole sign at the kerb carries the name in a cursive script picked out in white against a backlit panel. The garden bed along the front of the property is dry; the gardenia bushes that gave the property its name are now mostly woody and sparse. The carpark is empty at this hour. A single security light at the office end throws hard light across the asphalt.

The Gardenia Motor Inn was photographed at 22:22 on 2 April 2018, on the southern run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume Highway, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Flower-name motor inns were standard through the Australian postwar period, with the gardens at the front of the property often the only horticulture on the highway corridor between towns.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two storeys of brown brick face an empty car park. Yellow line markings divide the asphalt into bays. No cars. Warm light spills from bulkhead fittings onto timber-look doors and drawn curtains. Wrought iron balustrades run the length of the upper walkway. Trimmed topiary and a single pencil pine sit in narrow garden beds at ground level. The air carries the faint mineral smell of cooling bitumen.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
