Faded signage marks the abandoned Gateway Motel. Its peeling paint and broken windows reveal years of neglect. The deserted carpark, overgrown with weeds, tells a story of forgotten journeys.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The Gateway Motel sits on a corner block at the start of a regional road, the property name referring to its position as the entry point to the region beyond. The building is single-storey, brick, with the room doors facing the front carpark under a continuous awning. The brick is pale, the trim a brown along the fascia. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a 1970s sans-serif on a backlit panel, with a small archway graphic beside the lettering. The carpark is empty in the early evening. A row of metal-framed chairs sits along the walkway. A single security light at the office end throws hard cones across the asphalt.

The Gateway Motel was photographed at 21:36 on 9 April 2018, on the western Hawkesbury run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Gateway-themed naming was a standard postwar Australian motel flourish, with the property positioning itself as the threshold to whatever region the highway carried drivers into next.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A single-storey brick motel block sits flat against the night. Grey concrete masonry, tiled roof, three green doors spaced evenly along the facade. A security light throws hard yellow across the brickwork and bare asphalt. One doorway is barricaded with sheeting held in place by timber bracing. A small red sign is fixed beside it. The windows are narrow, curtainless. Power lines cross the dark sky above eucalyptus canopy.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
