03 THE STORY

About this print

The Golfview Lodge Motel sits on a street adjacent to a local golf course, the property name pointing at the upper-room view across the fairways during daylight. The building is two-storey, brick, with the room doors opening onto continuous balcony walkways at each floor. The brick is pale, the trim a contrasting green along the eaves and the balustrade. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a serif face on a backlit cream panel, with a small golf-flag graphic beside the lettering. The carpark is empty in the late evening. A row of mature trees between the carpark and the road provides daytime shade.

The Golfview Lodge Motel was photographed at 22:55 on 7 April 2018, on the Southern Highlands run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume and Princes Highway corridor, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Golf-course proximity was a standard postwar Australian motel selling point, with the visiting-golfers trade pulling in alongside the highway through-trade.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A two-storey brown brick motel block sits under a dark green metal roof. Concrete aggregate stairs climb the centre of the frame, flanked by black steel railings. Unit 19 sits at the top. Grey panelled doors line the ground floor, numbered 1 and 2. A single wall-mounted light throws a warm sodium glow across the brickwork and clipped hedge below. The car park asphalt is empty. No movement. No sound but the hum of the light fitting.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
