03 THE STORY

About this print

The Gosford Inn Motel sits on a Gosford street in a single-storey brick building, the room doors facing the front carpark under a continuous awning. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a serif face on a backlit panel. The brick is cream, painted in a brown trim along the fascia. Each room door is set into the wall at the standard motor-inn spacing, with the numbers in stencilled gold on small enamel plaques. The carpark is empty at this hour. A row of metal-framed chairs sits along the walkway outside the rooms. The road in front of the property is dark.

The Gosford Inn Motel was photographed at 23:45 on 4 April 2018, on the north run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific to the Central Coast, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Gosford is the largest town on the Central Coast and carried several traditional motor inns through the postwar period; the Gosford Inn sits inside that local cluster, on the property side rather than the brand-franchise side.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two storeys of pale brick face an empty car park. Room numbers in red. 7-8, 9-10 on the ground floor. 21-22, 23-24 above. Fluorescent light spills through drawn curtains on the lower level, casting a cold blue-green wash across the glass. Upstairs, warmer bulbs throw circles of yellow onto the brick. Hanging baskets of plastic flowers sit between the rooms. Steel railings with ornamental scrollwork panels line both walkways. A concrete planter box sits at the centre of the asphalt. No cars. No guests.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
