03 THE STORY

About this print

The High Mountains Motor Inn sits in the upper Blue Mountains, the property name carrying its altitude directly into the brand at the kerb. The building is single-storey, brick, with the room doors facing the front carpark under a continuous awning. The brick is dark, the trim a cream along the fascia. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a serif face on a backlit cream panel, with a small mountain-silhouette graphic beside the lettering. The carpark is empty in the small hours. The cool mountain air sits across the property. A single security light at the office end throws hard cones across the asphalt.

The High Mountains Motor Inn was photographed at 02:40 on 10 April 2018, on the western Blue Mountains run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western through the Blue Mountains. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Altitude-themed names like "High Mountains" were standard among Blue Mountains motor inns, with the property's elevation carried directly into the kerb-side branding.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Rooms 16 and 17 sit side by side beneath a concrete awning. Cream-painted render frames grey doors and a single sliding window. A sheer curtain hangs behind the glass, half drawn. Two wicker chairs and a small round table occupy the concrete apron between the doors. A red fire extinguisher is bolted to the wall. No smoking signs. Rubber doormats at each threshold. Fluorescent light flattens everything.

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
