The Ibis Budget Gosford. The standardised façade and flat utilitarian lines stand out against the Central Coast roadside-motel typology that dominates the rest of the Hotel Motel 101 series.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The Ibis Budget Gosford sits on a Central Coast street, the building two-storey with the room doors opening onto external balcony walkways at each floor. The Ibis Budget brand sign on a pole at the kerb carries the chain's standard pink-and-grey colour scheme, with the local name underneath the brand mark. The brick is pale, the trim painted in the brand's institutional colours. The carpark is empty at this hour. A row of small front gardens between the carpark and the road carries the standard chain-property landscaping. A single security light at the office end throws hard white light across the asphalt.

The Ibis Budget Gosford was photographed at 23:20 on 4 April 2018, on the north run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific to the Central Coast, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The Ibis Budget brand sign sits over a building that meets the project's typology test, the underlying motor-inn form preserved beneath the franchise badging that the chain has applied.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A two-storey motel facade, shot straight on at night. Aluminium louvre awnings run horizontal across both levels, casting thin shadows against pale rendered walls. The ground floor is painted dark teal. A single security floodlight burns white between the upper windows, flaring hard into the lens. Below, a clipped box hedge separates the building from a concrete car park. Three dracaenas stand between the windows. Every curtain is drawn. No cars. No people. Concrete stained with damp.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
