The Jamison Hotel photographed at night for Hotel Motel 101, Brett Patman's 2018 series. The title is a project conceit; the series actually covers 101 traditional NSW roadside motor inns. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The series includes a small number of chain-branded properties where the underlying building matched the typology.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The Jamison Hotel carries its name on a backlit sign at the front of the building, the lettering picked out in white against a dark panel. The building is two-storey, brick, with the bar at the ground floor and motel accommodation in the upper rooms. The room doors on the upper level open onto a continuous balcony walkway running the length of the building. A steel external staircase climbs from the carpark to the upper walkway at one end. The carpark is empty. A single security light above the staircase throws warm cones across the asphalt. The bar window at the front of the building is dark at this hour; the property has wound down for the night.

The Jamison Hotel was photographed at 23:15 on 3 April 2018, on the southern run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume Highway, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The pub-motel hybrid was a standard mid-twentieth-century Australian configuration, with the publican's-license building extending into motor inn accommodation as the postwar trade demanded it.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Rooms 9 and 10 sit side by side behind white doors marked with large red numerals. Split-face sandstone brick separates them. Black welcome mats rest on the concrete step. Below, cracked asphalt carries faded yellow parking lines and stencilled text. A string of festoon lights drapes across the awning. A potted palm stands beside a dark window that reflects a parked vehicle. No one is here. The fluorescent glow is steady and flat.

The series

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
