The Jetty Motel’s faded sign and peeling paint reveal its slow surrender to time. Empty rooms now echo forgotten laughter from past coastal getaways.

03 THE STORY

About this print

A single-storey motel block stretches across the frame at the Jetty Motel under a deep night sky. Blue steel fascia runs the length of the roofline. Below it, clerestory windows glow amber where the room lights are still on. Pale brick columns divide each room. Curtains hang limp behind sliding glass doors, some drawn, some half-open. A metal railing buckles where it has been bent forward from its posts. Parking bays sit empty on cracked tile paving. There are no figures and no vehicles. The amber light from the clerestory is doing most of the work in the frame.

The Jetty is one of 101 traditional Australian motor inns photographed for Hotel Motel 101 across 2018. The series ran in three sweeps out of Sydney: north along the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains, south down the start of the South Coast. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The shoot ran across roughly three to four weeks, late at night and into the small hours, on consecutive or alternate nights. The first commercial sale of work from the series came at the Finders Keepers market in Sydney in May 2018, soon after most of the photography was complete.

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
