03 THE STORY

About this print

The Katoomba Town Centre Motel sits on a Katoomba street within walking distance of the village centre, the building two-storey brick with the room doors opening onto continuous balcony walkways at each floor. The brick is pale, the trim a contrasting cream along the eaves and the balustrade. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a serif face on a backlit panel. The carpark is empty in the small hours, close to 3am. The mountain air is cool. The Katoomba village centre sits beyond the camera; the streetscape at this hour is dark and quiet.

The Katoomba Town Centre Motel was photographed at 02:59 on 10 April 2018, on the western Blue Mountains run of Hotel Motel 101, close to 3am, in the small-hours window that defined the project's shooting condition. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western through the Blue Mountains. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Katoomba sits at the heart of the upper Blue Mountains, one of the most heavily-trafficked tourist towns on the Great Western corridor.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two brown brick units sit side by side. Rooms 24 and 23. White panel doors, curtains drawn behind sliding windows. A shallow concrete awning curves above each entrance. White ceramic pots hold small plants between the doorways. A weathered timber picnic table, painted dark blue-grey, occupies a narrow strip of grass. A metal bin stands beside it. Late afternoon light falls warm across the brickwork, casting long shadows from trees outside the frame. A yellow wheel stop marks the edge of the bitumen parking bay. An oil stain on the asphalt.

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
